How does a temporary tattoo work?

The process by which you can apply a tattoo to your skin that lasts for several days is actually unbelievably simple.

When your design arrives from TattooedNow! it will be on a backing sheet of paper, which is in turn covered by a layer of plastic foil. On our larger tattoos, the design is mirrored on the back of this sheet, so you can see exactly where you are placing it.

First, make sure your skin is dry and free of oil and make-up. You should also make sure there is no hair in the area… shave that section of your skin, if you need to, for the best results.

Then you peel off the plastic foil and place the tattoo face down in the desired location and hold it there. While you do, get a damp cloth or sponge and use it to soak the backing paper for 30 or 40 seconds.

Once the design is wet all the way through, carefully remove the backing sheet and your tattoo should be properly applied and ready for you to display. Give the design a final pat down with the damp cloth and you're good to go.

Of course, the biggest difference between temporary and permanent tattoos is that temporary ones merely change the colour of the surface of your skin. A permanent tattoo is applied using a needle so that it reaches the layers beneath the surface.

The quality of our artwork is such that when you get one of our temporary tattoos, people will think it’s permanent.

It helps if you use the mattifying gel we supply to take away any shine from the tattoo and help it to sink into your skin that little bit more. You can also get a mattifying sealer from us that adds an extra layer of protection against the elements and helps to seal the tattoo on your skin.

How long your temporary tattoo lasts depends on several factors. Your skin type makes a big difference; so does the amount of activity you do and the location of your tattoo.

Our temporary tattoos are waterproof, so you are safe to take a bath or shower. But if you do a lot of physical activity, or your sportswear rubs repeatedly against your tattoo, there is obviously a risk that your design won't stay in place as long as you’d like.

At TattooedNow! we are experts in supplying temporary tattoos to TV and film productions so that actors can wear designs that look completely authentic and permanent.

That means you get the peace of mind of knowing that our tattoos work well and appear like the real thing – even though they will fade away after several days.

Now that you know how temporary tattoos work, take a look through our extensive collections, see if there is a design that you feel will suit you – and give it a go.
